At Eastern Clothing Co., we’ve been outfitting wedding parties in Watertown and beyond since 1937. And every week, we see two types of grooms: the planner, and the guy sweating through his t-shirt because he waited until the month of.
We can help both. But the planner will inevitably have the most peaceful experience of the two.
You can overnight the napkins. You can rush the catering order. You can throw money at almost any problem in wedding planning. But there is one thing you simply cannot rush: a suit that fits.
Most last-minute grooms learn this the hard way. They realize about three weeks before the big day that “custom” doesn’t come with same-day shipping.
If you want your group photos to look sharp, not like a random lineup of guests, you need a logistics plan. Not a wish. A plan.
Here is how to tackle the timeline (for you and your groomsmen) without losing your mind.
8–12 Months Out: Set the Tone
The first step is making the blueprint for your wedding. This means figuring out your venue, the time of year you’ll host your wedding, and the overall look you want to curate.
Is it a black-tie evening at a hotel? Is it a rustic barn wedding? Your answer to these questions will have everything to say about the wedding attire for you and your guests.
Once you’ve narrowed down the feel you’re looking for, as well as the color tones that complement your ideal wedding atmosphere, it’s time to hone in on the details and decide how you’ll stand out on your big day. Maybe you wear a vest, while your groomsmen don’t. Maybe you rock a peaked lapel. Set the style guide before you ask anyone to buy a single thing.
6–8 Months Out: You (And Only You)
Custom is slow. It takes patience to create a suit that molds to your body. That’s why 6-8 months is a good timeline to decide if you want custom or made-to-measure garments.
When you go with made-to-measure, your tailors have to source the cloth, cut the pattern, and build the garment from the ground up in a way that beautifully marries to your proportions. And if you start early, you get the pick of the litter. We know from working with hundreds of grooms that you’ll sleep better knowing your suit isn’t stuck on a container ship somewhere in the Atlantic.
Keep in mind that it’s infinitely easier to adjust a suit that is slightly loose than to conjure extra fabric for one that is too tight. That is to say, if your goal is to change your weight, let your tailors know! They’ll make sure your re-sizing can be comfortably accommodated so your new suit fits your wedding-ready look.
5–6 Months Out: The Groomsmen
Now that your wedding style is set in stone, it’s time to start coordinating with your groomsmen. The key here is to have a design direction in mind before sharing it with your posse. You know what they say, it’s hard to reach a consensus with too many cooks in the kitchen. So lock in your own choices first, then bring your party to your tailor.
Save yourself a logistical headache and paste this into your groomsmen chat thread right now with any details you’ve already figured out:
- The Order: [Link]
- Deadline: [Date]
- The Shoes: [Specific Color, e.g., “Dark Brown Cap-Toe”]
- The Shirt: [Collar Style, e.g., “Spread”]
- The Tie: [Note if you are buying these]
But what about your “out-of-Town” guys? You likely have a groomsman who isn’t local. Please do not make him fly into Watertown just to get measured! Tell him to walk into a local tailor, pay for a measurement sheet, and email it to us. We can work from that.
3–4 Months Out: The Reality Check
It’s time to see the fruits of your labor and try on your new groom suit. At this point, the overall shape should fit you pretty well. Now, we’re looking at the minor details to ensure they truly sit well (and move well) with your body.
The Hard Deadline: If a guy hasn’t ordered by now, he is officially late. This means we cannot guarantee their fabric will come from the same dye lot and you risk slight color variations that will show up in the photos.
8–10 Weeks Out: On-Site Precision
This is the home stretch. And because Eastern Clothing Co. handles alterations right here on-site, we have total control. We aren’t shipping your jacket to a warehouse. We will make any final adjustments at this time before you’re on your way out the door once and for all.
Please bring the shoes you plan to wear on the wedding day to your fitting. Not “similar” shoes. The shoes. The heel height changes how the trouser falls and if you just guess, you might end up with pants that flood around your ankles.
Our goal is for you to leave feeling confident, ready, and secure in your fit.
3–4 Weeks Out: The Dry Run
Don’t wait until the morning of your wedding to try everything on one more time. Do a full run-through at home beforehand.
Suit up completely. Studs, cufflinks, tie, the whole nine yards. Move around, sit down, and make sure nothing feels stiff. If something doesn’t feel right, there’s still time to fix it. And don’t forget the shoes, break them in at home for a few hours to avoid blisters on the big day.
1–2 Weeks Out: Stay Proactive
You’ve done the work. Now protect the investment. If you’re driving, hang your suits high to prevent any hard creases on your suit. And just for another dose of insurance, carry your suit on board with you if you’re flying to your wedding destination. The last thing you want is for your suit to get lost (don’t forget to also include accessories like socks and ties).
We also recommend making a “fix-it” kit packed with all the essentials you may need to fix any last-minute problems like a stain on a white shirt or your dog’s hair all over your trousers. Here are some of the items you could include:

Wedding Emergency Kit

Ready to Get Started?
Weddings have enough moving parts to keep anyone busy. Your suit shouldn’t be the thing keeping you up at night. In fact, for many of our clients, coming into the showroom is the first time the wedding planning actually feels like a celebration rather than a second job.
Whether you’ve got a mood board full of ideas or you’re not even sure what a peak lapel is, we’re here to walk you through it. You get to touch the fabrics, see the colors in real light, and hand off the logistics to us. Think of us as your stylists, project managers, and tailors, all rolled into one. We track the shipments, wrangle the groomsmen, and ensure that when you stand at the altar, the only thing you’re nervous about is your vows—not your hemline.
Don’t stress about the calendar. Even if you’re running a bit behind, stop by. We’ve set tighter timelines than yours and will map out the best next steps.
Book your appointment or swing by our Watertown showroom. Let’s get you looking like the man of the hour.
